Many people talk about this place as if it’s a cultural movement. Adorned with film-noir memorabilia, paintings and old records, the place is named after the eponymous Cuban movie, a David Lynch-esque film from the renowned Cuban filmmaker Fernando Pérez. Overlooking Calle 17 (meaning 17 Street in English), where old American cars roam by, the atmosphere in this artistic cafe/bar is unfettered by the bustling on the street. This is a place where Cuba’s intellectual elites dine, drink and engage in heated debates on anything from weather to the country’s contemporary art scene. This must be Cuba’s answer to Paris’ famous Les Deux Magots. Definitely worth a try. It’s closed on Mondays.
