Founded in 1983 as a tribute to Wifredo Lam (1902-1982), Cuban’s most celebrated surrealist painter, Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Wifredo Lam (Wilfredo Lam Center of Contemporary Art) has grown into an important cultural institution for art exhibitions, education, and research. Most notably, located behind the Plaza de la Catedral, the centre is the headquarters for the Havana Art Biennial. Consisting of several spacious exhibition rooms, a video library and an archive room, the institute has an extensive collection of 1,000 art pieces by artists from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
